William Gardner worked for Marion Davis ( a movie star, as well as William Randolph Hearsts' mistress for some 30 years). Joe Kennedy was JFK's father who was a movie producer in Hollywood during the 20's. When JFK got married to Jacqueline Kennedy they honeymooned at Marion's house in Beverly Hills where Bill had gotten a Job:

Hearst had already died. They came to stay in her house because Marion was a very old friend of Joe Kennedy. That's How William Gardner met them in the house. That opened up William to his visit with Kennedy in Washington. Then he got involved with the election for JFK in 1960.
